Form, Pattern, & Surface Design—August 2–3
Form, Pattern, & Surface Design—August 2–3
Instructor: Christina Riccio
Time: August 2–3, 10–5pm
Join Christina Riccio on a deep dive into her surface design process. This two-day summer workshop will give students the opportunity to understand how form, pattern, and surface design work together to create pieces that feel uniquely their own. Learn how to develop personal style through underglazing, patterning, and carving.
Students will learn techniques for how to develop and design their own patterns. The workshop will begin with an exercise in pattern design. During this exercise we will discuss the elements/principles of design, and how they work together to create a successful pattern. Students will then spend time designing their own pattern with instructor guidance. From there, students will bring that pattern to life in clay! We will spend time discussing various underglaze applications (spraying, brushing) and how form and pattern work together to create two-dimensional imagery on a three-dimensional surface. The workshop will begin with paper and color pencils, then move to test tiles, then add imagery directly to our pots!
Materials
SCAC will provide paper, pencils, test tiles, carving tools, slip trailers, and underglazes. Students should come prepared with trimmed, leather heard pieces ready to adorn with surface design on day two!
