Wednesday PM Session 6- Kilns and Fire!
Kilns, Kilns, Kilns! Explore the heat, chemistry, and craft behind the art of kiln firing in this dynamic and hands-on class focused on the many firing methods available at SCAC. Whether you’re new to atmospheric firings or looking to deepen your understanding of kiln operation and maintenance, this course offers a comprehensive dive into the world of ceramic firing.
Over the session, students will create work specifically designed for firing in a variety of kilns, including electric, salt, soda, gas reduction, and raku kilns. Each firing method will be explored in depth — from the unique surface effects and glaze interactions they create, to the specific forms and clays best suited for each environment.
In addition to making and firing work, we’ll cover:
How each kiln functions and the science behind the firing process
Best practices for loading, firing, and cooling
Kiln safety protocols
Maintenance and troubleshooting tips to help keep these powerful tools in working order
Historical and contemporary uses of each firing method
Students will gain valuable experience not only in producing ceramic work for each kiln but also in helping manage the firing process itselfClass fees include unlimited Open Studio time (outside of class, workshop & private party times) and your first 25 pounds of clay and firing. Previous experience prefered.
