Nov 1-2 Mary Barringer and Hayne Bayless. Two Handbuilders Walk into a Bar…

from $300.00

Longtime friends and fellow-potters Hayne Bayless and Mary Barringer invite you to join us for

a weekend of building, exploration, and play. We will demonstrate a variety of handbuilding

techniques, including coil, slab, press-mold, and extrusion, and will cover our individual

approaches to surface decoration; participants will have hands-on time both days to

experiment. Myths will be busted and secrets revealed!

Topics include: simple press molds; adding and subtracting texture; Tyvek stencils; colored slip

inlay and layered slips; fashioning tools out of common materials and modifying existing ones;

and how to make custom extruder dies. This workshop will also interest throwers looking to

expand their horizons beyond the wheel.

Rough schedule:

Saturday - Building

10-1 Demos by HB and MB.

Hayne will demonstrate his extruded forms and talk about how he uses the extruder for both

consistency and improvisation.

Mary will make press-molded and coiled pots and talk about integrating surface texture into

the forming process.

1-2 lunch and brief slide shows by both artists.

2-5 Hands-on. Participants will have a chance to experiment with extruded forms and/or with

handbuilding and texture. We are hoping there will also be some collaboration and cross-

fertilization using our two approaches.

Sunday – Slips

10-1 Beginning with an overview by MB about different formulations and uses of slips, we will

then demonstrate our very different ways of using clay-based surface treatments, including

stretched slabs, Tyvek stencils, resist, layered slips, and the fine art of erasing.

1-2-ish Lunch

2-5 Hands-on. Using either the work they began the day before or leather-hard pieces brought

from home, participants can try any and all of the demonstrated techniques.

Participants should bring:

Handbuilding tools (Studio has some for use)

Texture tools (Studio has some for use)

Brushes, including some you don’t normally use (Studio has some for use)

An Exacto knife (Studio has some for use)

Self-healing cutting mat

Sketchbook

2-3 leather-hard pots, if possible.10am-5pm Both days. Lunch orders taken and picked up for a additional fee.

The studio will take lunch orders and pick them up for a fee. We also have a small fridge.
